Real World Adobe InDesign CS5

This is now my second attempt to review this book. I wrote a previous review last week. It was up for a nano-second and then disappeared. Who knows why? Anyway, this book is The Bible of InDesign and also happens to be a fun read (which says a lot for a 900 page computer book). The authors are wonderful writers and there's much to learn. So don't delay. Dive in. You won't be disappointed.

As a graphic designer, I did not always have time to learn the ins and outs of InDesign. Too much time spent producing, too little spent learning; I am sure that many designers out there are familiar with that. In front of me are Blatner's and Kvern's volumes for InDesign CS2, CS3, CS4, and now CS5. What is so great about Real World InDesign CS5 is that it serves as a quick reference for whenever you are blocked with any specific feature.
Also, a great deal of learning the application comes from just browsing the book, randomly turning pages, and being surprised up of authors.
Notice how I never once mentioned that you should read the book cover to cover (more than 800 pages). My secret for using this book? Well, it's the 60 page index in the end. It has never failed to direct me to the information I needed to solve a problem, or to learn about a feature.

Another excellent reference manual for all things InDesign! This book covers everything from installation to the more advanced features such as InDesign scripting and GREP styles. Don't fear the the book's size: it's all there in manageable chunks, sorted changing technology surrounding it!
This book is highly recommended for users of all levels. There's even bonus online material to be found via the publisher's website.
